Class Goals

After studying John Dewey's Democracy and Education and Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed I began to look at the role of the educator in a different way. Both were asking educators to do so much more than teach reading, writing and arithmetic. Each saw the role of the teacher as one who helps nurture and guide students along the way to becoming adults who have the ability to think critically, and therefore, to become productive, thoughtful , active citizens. I am hoping that this class will motivate me to finish revising my thesis. I am looking forward to sharing ideas and educational philosophies with other class members.
